i don't get it

i was browsing through the Apple website when i came across this article.

"Who cares if the 15-GB iPod costs just $50 more? Everyone interviewed at Macworld who had seen the mini had been charmed by its glamour. The specs didn't matter; they had to have one, and the cost be damned."

"The mini, available in five colors from pink to gold, is a fashion accessory. The Dell DJ is not."

15GB iPod: $299.00
4GB iPod Mini: $249.00
15GB Dell DJ: $199.00
20GB Dell DJ: $249.00

even if you just buy the iPod over the iPod Mini, you get 3.75 times more space for only fifty dollars more.

am i the only one this doesn't make complete sense to?

So the iPod Mini may be overcharging itself as a novelty, but I think iPods are really tried and true to be high quality products, and thus can charge more for the same amount of space. When you compare specs, Apple has lost to the PC market for years, even the fastest G5 has lower clock speeds than average PCs, but their stuff simply runs better. Image is everything, and I as a customer of many products from both Apple and Dell (used be a big mac junky, now every PC I own is Dell) really feel that Apple makes better products, and I'm going to project that bias onto the Dell DJ without ever even having touched one (like a gullible customer should be). I like the way my iPod works. They menu system is intuitive like all other Apple products, and the controls work very smoothly. So it makes perfect sense that Apple can charge so much more for the iPod...people trust it'll be great. Finally, read the customer feedback about the Dell DJ on ZD-Net...it looks really really nasty. Dell DJ is locked into MusicMatch Jukebox, a nightmarish piece of software. The iPod on the other hand, isn't locked to iTunes (you can use EphPod on a plethora of OSes, and X-Play for Windows), but hell, iTunes ownz anyway and we know it. I thought that same thing you did John. I think the mini is just a gimmick that is really well marketed. It isn't anything special compared to the iPod, besides the new touch wheel with the buttons incorperated into it. I say if someone is a pussy they get the mini, if they have balls they get the extra 15 gigs and fill the damn thing up! I like the orange! Posted by: Rob at March 30, 2004 07:59 PM
