fulltimate

we finally had most of a team for TC ultimate. we lost 10-15, but it was still fun, and that's what the game is about.

Short Answer Question

I presented this to the occupants of my car on the way to ultimate: What's the most overrated band? Bands mentioned were Metallica, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band.

Possibly Nirvana? They were a good band, but they only put out two decent records. People are more infatuated with Kurt Cobain's suicide than his actual musical presence. In defense on DMB, throw out the radio hits, throw out the Edina bastards that claim to know everything about Dave, then buy "Before These Crowded Streets" or a ticket to see him in concert. His band has much more depth and talent than the radio hits akkow. Also see Metallica in concert. Sure they put the same crap on every record, but they've been doing it for 20 years which is very impressive. Pearl Jam? Not much I can say to defend them, only 2 good CD's. Nirvana's 2 were better. Metallica may be overrated after a certain point in their career; I think they're one of those bands where everyone can name a certain period of time where they started to suck (sort of like Saturday Night Live). The exact time this happened will differ wildly between people (for me, it was anything after the "black album"). I had trouble coming up with any other highly-overrated band at the moment, but I can sure think of a solo artist in that category: Madonna. I've never gotten why she was popular; the computers that back up her tracks have more warmth and personality than she does. Posted by: Kev at June 19, 2004 02:03 PM
On Metallica: Their MUSIC is overrated after a certain point in their career. They can still put on a good show, especially if they play older music. I saw them last August and ass was kicked. On DMB: Overrated to the max! I've never been able to get into any of their music. Its a phenomenon I never understood. Definitely my vote. On Madonna: I see Madonna the way you, Kev, see Metallica. I love her music up until about Bedtime Stories. Evita was okay, but I wouldn't call it true Madonna. Ever since her music has pretty much sucked, but don't spread Madonna hate. You know that as soon as Vogue or Material Girl come on you dance inside. Posted by: teresa at June 19, 2004 08:21 PM
Everclear.
Matchbox 20.
The Goo-Goo Dolls. Posted by: Emilia at June 19, 2004 11:07 PM
First in response to Emilia: I don't think those bands are highly rated in the first place. They have a solid base of fans, but none of them are considered "great" I'd say. And Everclear's old stuff isn't bad. Rob: Nirvana was an excellent band. The reason they are not overrated is because they were original and inspired the grunge era of the 90s (basically). Only putting out two good records does not make them a bad group. Dave is pretty good, and I don't think he is overrated, he does what he does well and it's fun to listen to. Metallica on the other hand is highly overrated. They do the same thing on every record, and their concerts are about pyrotechnics and power. Pearl Jam....meh. You seem to be going quantity over quality. I don't think putting out 10 records in 20 years makes someone NOT overrated. On Madonna: I can see why people love her music and image. Sex appeal was what it was all about for her for a long time (what a horrible sentence) and now that she's getting older she's still trying to stay with the popular group and failing. She has some of the most recognizable songs from the second half of the 20th century. I would have to say U2. The majority of their music sounds the same, and it hasn't changed in the entirety of their existence. I do own The Joshua Tree, which I bought for $6, but their music just isn't that good. People are obsessed with Bono and the whole group, but I've never seen why. I try to listen to the CD but I just can't get all the way through it without A. walking away or B. falling asleep. This is supposedly one of their best. They have an original sound, but it's been the same sound for the past 20 years. Posted by: Ben at June 20, 2004 12:35 PM
Bah, all my nice formatting didn't work in that post. Stupid comment system that is mine as well. Posted by: Ben at June 20, 2004 02:27 PM
I revote for U2! That is the perfect overrated band! Posted by: Rob at June 20, 2004 02:45 PM
Oh crap! How could I have forgotten U2????? And would I be slaughtered if I said Fleetwood Mac? We said overrated, Ben, not highly rated. People like Everclear. This is something I don't understand. And Matchbox 20 was UBER-popular for awhile. The Goo-Goo Dolls just suck. Posted by: Emilia at June 20, 2004 03:45 PM
there are two kinds of overrated.] Type A.) Extremely highly rated, but when looked at critically, they aren't truly bad. Examples: U2, Fleetwood Mac, Dave Matthews Band. Type B.) Don't seem as legendary as Type A, but are actually mediocre at best. Examples: Green Day, Three Doors Down. Posted by: john at June 20, 2004 05:29 PM
The guy who's now the drummer for the Goo Goo Dolls went to UNT when I did. Even though we never met, he referred to me as a "jackass" in a letter to the North Texas Daily, simply because, as a KNTU DJ, I was opposed to changing the station's format from jazz to rock (so, for example, his local rock band could get more airplay). Whenever someone mentions the Goo Goo Dolls, my first response is always, "They need a new drummer." Posted by: Kev at June 21, 2004 01:35 AM
rob: good call on u2. i totally forgot about them. emilia: i was going to say fleetwood mac, but i was afraid. i don't know why. nobody can do much to me via john 'gary' guari comment log. UNT people: i've heard rumors about the radio station being formerly called KUNT radio. is this true? because its thinks like that and the YOU CAN'T SPELL CUNT WITHOUT THE U-N-T shirts that make my day. Posted by: teresa at June 21, 2004 01:55 AM
i dont know about UNT, but i do know that at one point the University of Minnesota radio station was KUMM an the they had stuff relating to GET KUMM IN YOUR EAR. Posted by: john at June 21, 2004 06:31 PM
KUMM also had the slogan "Don't touch that dial, it has KUMM on it!" Posted by: Ben at June 21, 2004 07:34 PM
I love juvenile sexual humor more than like anything else in the world. Except perhaps for French. Fun Fact: the French word for cunt is: cupluh! Posted by: Emilia at June 21, 2004 11:19 PM
No, there was never any serious thought given to changing KNTU to KUNT when the university changed from NTSU to UNT (remember, the same FCC that fines shock-jocks also handles call letters) but that didn't stop people from asking about it ad nauseam. It also didn't stop a late-night DJ back in the early, early days (like when the station couldn't be heard past Lake Dallas) from saying "You're listening to KUNT--we're a little fuzzy, but we're still there." Oh, and there's a station in San Jose, CA with the call letters KOME, and they use(d) a similar slogan: "Look out...you've got KOME on your dial!" Posted by: Kev at June 22, 2004 01:03 AM
