good time

i very much enjoyed watching these playoff games. hopefully i'll have cable in my dorm room this fall so i can keep track of things.

drew and i watched Adaptation and Wonderland today before going to Jake's for the game. i liked Adaptation, even if it was really weird. Wonderland was OK, but not spectacular.

i'm anticipating that work tomorrow will be busy, seeing as people have had an extra day to order lightbulbs off the internet today.

i want the next weekend already and this one hasn't even really ended yet.

the windmill

i went bowling with drew, nasty nelson, jake, mattsson and langren. my average was somewhere around 50, AKA pitiful. i used the windmill technique, which for some reason improved my game. i have no idea why.

too many people out of town this weekend. at least i don't work tomorrow (today).

wheeeew!

T-wolves busted it out.

ended up at billy's house, went to wendy's, then back to billy's for clerks: TAS episode 1.

durned living with parents, i can't stay out as late anymore.

goodnaaaah

went to annie goodner's house for a get-together. a small smattering of people were there. billy was in attendance so mirth ensued.

mow

ok i'm about to go mow the lawn. according to official reports from my dad, there is not a lot of gas left in our container. additionally, our really old lawnmower doesn't hold in gas anymore, meaning that if you put gas in, you need to mow right away or it will leak out.

the easy way will be if there is enough gas to mow the entire lawn. if not, i'll have to go buy that little green can of oily stuff and refill the container with gas, which i really don't want to do. we'll just have to see if it is the easy or hard way.

EDIT: enough gas. w00t

savage day

the Muscly-Armed Paperboys lost their second game of the summer. our roster was: Myself, Eric, Hagen, Drew, Ted, Phil Rose, and Krissy's friend Steve from Colby.

it was frustrating at times, but I am remembering that the other team had five subs to our zero. the game was lost due to fatigue, not lack of skills by the M.A.Ps. the score was 15-9.

after the ultimate game, drew and i headed over to Janine's house to check out the last half of the T-wolves game. more frustration. hopefully being back in the MPLS will reignite our team's fire.

i'm so tired. i need to shower and hit up the old bed.

tuesday happened

work was uneventful. not-crazy-rick is out the next 3 days, so that means extra work, huzzah (not)!

i went to the HS for the Concert Band concert and then went to krissy's to watch the conclusion of a dissapointing T-wolves game. i attribute our loss to the lack of Kobe Bryant jokes.

from there, drew, janine and i went to bullion's house. i had a bagel and finished up their 1% milk straight out of the bottle. drew, janine and i then proceeded downstairs to make jokes about Pirates of the Carribean.

gotta work tomorrow.

movin' me down the highway,

rollin' me down the highway.

movin' ahead so life won't pass me by.

official proclamation

Natalie Imbruglia is gone and married. there must be another.

I'm officially dibsing Alison Lohman.

if anyone has a problem with this, we're gonna have to duel. it's just that simple.

other than figuring out that Alison Lohman is SO mine, this day was drew intensive day. he helped out at my workplace for a few hours because we're going to be shorthanded this week.

then we finished Matchstick Men and went to frisbee practice.

after that, drew, janine and I hit up khan's mongorian mongolian barbecue.

then we went to see 50 First Dates at the $2 theater and lured Jake, Adam, Wick, Mattssson and Nasty Nelson into coming somehow.

partay

i had a bunch of people over to my house to watch the T-wolves beat down the Lakers, partially satisfying my desire to see a bunch of people in one location.

highlights included tricking Adam into eating dog treats.

conversation of the night

Lisa Johnson: Some guy at work said he loved my aura and wanted to draw me. I think he was gay.
Billy Glick: Maybe he just wanted to draw your aura, and your aura was a really hot gay guy.

CJ/Extroversion

i saw Current Jam today. it was pretty good. halo fell through at two different places. meh.

seeing a bunch of people i hadn't seen for a while made me want to go to a big party where a bunch of people would be. i hope there's at least one of those this summer.

drew bought some DVDs at Hollywood, including Matchstick Men starring Nicholas Cage and (omg) Alison Lohman. i LOVE alison lohman. now that Natalie Silverchair Imbruglia is taken ( :'-( ) i think alison lohman is top of my list.

also, i'm working on ideas for stuff i could write about to submit to progressiveboink.com. the trick is that humor is mostly about timing and non-verbal communication. over the internet, there are no facial expressions, so i need to work on my timing. hopefully i'll crank out something worth a chuckle.

music hoodleehoo: the night goes on

after watching most of the wolves game at brittany's house, i went to go find Phil and Stephanie.

after like 7000 passes by 4 different apartment buildings, i found Phil's. we drove to the Bryant-Lake Bowl only to find out that Tiki Obmar had sold out. that's right, SELLOUTS. the girl had comp tickets that obviously weren't going to be picked up, but still wouldn't let us in. so we went to Cheapo, where i realized some of my musical goals.

i bought Franz Ferdinand, and the CD The End is Here by Five Iron Frenzy. it is basically their final CD, The End is Near plus a recording of their FINAL concert ever. it was 14 bucks for 2 CDs (but one i already own).

i watched a little of the Guster on Ice DVD that Phil bought, and am about go to bed.

music hoodleehoo

i'm feeling an intense urge to go CD shopping it's been a while since i've legitimately bought a CD at a store. it's been either burning from Whatchoo Talkin' 'Bout Willis Library or ordering thru ebay or half.com.

Some CDs i've been thinking about:

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Billy told me they were good (perhaps the best CD of 2004 thus far). this alone is enough to merit buying it. i also saw their video for "Take Me Out." the video was decent. not great, but good. the song is straightforward and rockin' though.

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News

i have mixed feelings about this band. "Float On" is ridiculously catchy and gets heavy play on Drive 105, which is the station of choice at work (thankfully). the clips i've listened to on the iTunes music store sound good enough. the only thing is that i saw Modest Mouse when they came with De La Soul, The Flaming Lips and Cake a couple years ago. i remember distinctly not enjoying their show. their sound mix was pretty crappy, but that could have been not their fault. i'll contemplate this CD and wait for feedback from people more knowledgable about this particular band.

Guster - Keep It Together

Guster is one of those bands i probably should have gotten into a long time before i (will) did. i'd heard of Guster since a long time ago, but never really checked them out. i hear "Amsterdam" enough on Drive 105 to know it pretty well, and i like the acoustic version (with banjo) that Phil put as his background music that one day (i DLed it). i have a feeling that Guster could have the same kind of effect on me as Weezer did (AKA it takes a while for me to warm up to them).

Something by Genesis

it just feels like i should own something by Genesis

Stuff that music-savvy friends suggest

i like to be told about new (or sometimes old) and exciting music as much as i like telling people about new (or sometimes old) and exciting music. holla back if there's something you feel is quasi-to-fully important that's missing.

also, people i have told about Spymob who i've yet to give CDs to (Billy you are one i know) or people who have not heard Spymob NEED to hear Spymob. they were the backup band for N.E.R.D. on In Search Of and were their touring back up band for both the In Search Of and the Fly Or Die tours. word.

EEEEEEEEEEEE

so i'm on my computer from school right now. i'm using a monitor i borrowed from Morin, but it produces a continuous high-pitched noise. this won't fly. i'll probably have to return it and find another one to borrow if this thing doesn't get remedied.

today the Muscly-Armed Paperboys played their first game verus Hooniebear 2: the Return of the Dank. we lost 6-15, but it was good. improvement, ho!

tomorrow i'll be working, hanging out with Meredith Salmi OMG, watching the first part of the Wolves/Lakers game then going to the Bryant Lake Bowl to see Tiki Obmar.

the timberwolves got hearts pumping in the Guari household tonight. my fam plus six kids all jumping and yelling. it was sweet. there is some halo going on at billy's house, but i got work PLUS the first Muscly-Armed Paperboys frisbee game tomorrow. sports has got me pumped, wtf.

influx

today i got to see tons of people who have recently gotten back from college. i ate at Imperial House with Hinds and saw billy, jon nasty nelson, mark fehlant and others there.

after dinner, i piled joanna johnson, drew james and meira lifson into my car. we visited mark at the edina market. we cruised to lisa johnson's house to meet up with her and jackie eastman. i went to pick up mark at 10:00 from his job and we came back to see that sheila frankfurt had been added to the crowd. soon came billy, jon, adam simpson and joel bonstrom. it was a regular ballyhoo in lisa's basement. i got to talk music with billy and sheila and listen to hilarious stories from people's respective colleges.

i love hanging out with so many groups of people. i described it to mark that the way our friendships with other people work is like a big Venn diagram where most of the people overlap, but some don't. tonight had the potential to be awkward with that strange mix of people, but it worked out great. i'm pumped for the summer and the festivities that shall be contained within.

oh ye of little faith, want a cookie?

i introduced drew, emily bullion and maqs halverson to Mallrats today. every time i watch that movie it resolidifies the fact in my mind that Mallrats is a great movie. it also resolidifies the fact that JEREMY LONDON IS THE WORST ACTOR ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET.

Posted by john guari at 11:22 PM | Comments (6)

halo triad

i just played a little Halo with Drew, and Q. Q claimed to have improved since when we last played, and he proved himself right. what really baffles me is the fact that Drew was actually playing a lot better himself. it doesn't make sense because not three days ago he was doing horribly. craziness. drew took a few pics, i'm sure those will surface relatively soon.

today i was sucked in by the awful world of MTV programming. i watched an episode of Made and two episodes of the latest Real World: Miami. the Real World is ridiculous. they don't even try to cover up the fact that they cast people with clashing personalities into the same home every time. is there still a fratboy who cheats on his girlfriend? yes. is there still that one girl who's even bitchier than the others? yes. is there a token black fellow. of course. do they go on a trip which makes them all really irritable so they blow up at each other? uh huh. all this in just two episodes.

for those who've heard/seen it. do you think that new Modest Mouse single, "Float On," sounds like it could be a Clash song? it does to me. also, the video for Franz Ferdinand's single is similar in style to the video for "Float On."

billy, what's the word on Franz Ferdinand. it seems their single is a pretty straightforward rocker. what's the rest of the CD like (do you know)?

iron hook redux

so i have a new dentist now. i had previously gone to a dentist's office where the dental hygienists jabbed me in the gums so many times i nearly fell unconscious from blood loss[/hyperbole]. my appointment today took only about 15 to 20 minutes and was nigh painless. i'm glad i have a new dentist.

brought up at work: Why does Cities 97 play Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" EVERY SINGLE DAY?! isn't that song like 10 years old?

analogy:

"Fast Car" is to Alternative Radio as "One of These Nights" is to Classic Rock radio. i.e. you can't go a single day without hearing it on the radio (unless you don't listen to the radio, but that's not the point).

i'm brainstorming up ways to make my posts a little less boring. there may be a few "name your favorite this" or "name your top five that." maybe i should think up some other contest. those always seem pretty amusing.

today i've worked again. i'm basically just waiting for some of the other colleges and universities to let their kids out so that we can all play some mad halo.

oh yeah drew and i watched Alien a few nights ago. i had a corresponding alien dream. it was crazy.

today was just a good day

i woke up at 9:00 AM today for some reason. i watched TV for a while then called Liesl to see if she wanted to do something today. when i got access to the Lumina, i drove out to the U of M and then we went to Savers. i got one t-shirt and liesl got a few as well as a VHS copy of Say Anything for 3 dollars. we watched the first 5 episodes of Aqua Teen Hunger Force at my house and then went to Convention Grill. i dropped her back off at the U and now i'm at home. maybe i'll be doing something tonight, or maybe i'll just stay in. it doesn't really matter. it's not like there are tons of kids to do stuff with as of yet. perhaps i'll just take in a ninja gaiden session movie. yep, nothing like a good quality NINJA CUTTING THE HEADS OFF OF EVERYTHING movie.

homeward bound but no cat or dogs get it it's a movie reference lol

i was in my parents' mini van for 16 hours yesterday. i will describe it in terms of who drove and what music was listened to. all times are approximate

9:00AM - 12:00PM

I drove, we listened to my Lab Band CD and the One O'Clock Lab Band CD from 1975. the Lab 75 CD is significant because all the songs were composed or arranged by Lyle Mays (of Pat Metheny Group quasi-fame). then (apropros, concurrently) we listened to the eponymous Pat Metheny Group album. we ate lunch at Subway.

12:00PM - 6:00PM

my Dad drove. i read about 100 pages of Charlotte's Web because it is B. Thompson Stroud THE AUTHOR's favorite book, and i remember enjoying it as a child. i took a nap through almost all of Kansas. SCORE! I woke up and finished Charlotte's Web. music included some Chris Botti stuff my dad likes listening to as well as the Best of Sade.

quote of the trip:

My Dad: "You know, it's not every day you find a CD that has so many good songs all on one album."
My Mom: "Mike, that's why it's called the BEST of Sade."

i woke up at about 5:00 and we ate at wendys sometime around 6:00.

6:00PM - 8:00PM

I drove. we tore out of the Wendy's parking lot listening to Spymob's Sitting Around Keeping Score. then we listened to Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Vol. 1. the parents needed to use the restroom, so we stopped at a gas station. the plan was to have me drive the last leg (AKA IOWA) of the journey.

8:00PM - 10:00PM

my Mom drove. i can't remember all of what we listened to but we definitely listened to Bob Dylan's Love and Theft.

10:00PM - 1:00AM

I drove. we finished Love and Theft and i put in Fleming and John's The Way We Are we listened to that maybe 2.5 times, mostly because i was too lazy to think of what other CD i wanted to listen to. then we just listened to various Minneapolis radio stations, as we were nearing the Twin Cities metro area.

i took a shower then collapsed on my bed.

Lessons Learned

  • Texas drivers suck
  • beef jerky tastes good
  • i can't eat a subway meatball sandwich without using at least five thousand napkins
  • when CDs are called "The Best of," it usually means it contains their best material

for those of you who may have forgotten

my last day of school is THIS WEDNESDAY THE 5TH OF MAY.

this is a big "ha ha" going out to Lawrence and Northwestern kids.

i think my allergies may be a lot worse in TX than they ever were in MN. I'm having a hard time recalling when allergies in MN made me feel ill for 3 days. soon i shall escape.

today and tomorrow will be the bulk of my packing. my mom has told me that Not-Crazy Rick from work says that keeping my monitor in storage over the summer shouldn't make any problems. i hope he's right.

i have my Aural Skills II written final in 15 minutes. i couldn't be stressing out about this less. it shall be calm, sea like a mirror. my Theory II will be more of a moderate breeze, and my Jazz Records climbs the Beaufort Scale higher to Near Gale, or perhaps Gale.

i went to Whatchoo Talkin' 'Bout Willis Library yesterday because i had "Heaven on Their Minds" stuck in my head. i got the soundtrack to the film version, which sounds a little different than the ones i remember downloading a couple years ago. perhaps they were from the broadway soundtrack. nevertheless, i still got to hear judas scream:

"JESSSUUUUUUUSSSS!!!!"

that is so funny, it gets me every time.
