sesevenen

i watched Se7en for the first time in my life last night after the Many Tones of Jeremy Stones. Jeremy played very well last night. yeah guy!

Se7en was pretty good, but i didn't like Brad Pitt's character. maybe you're not supposed to like his character. Morgan Freeman rocked as usual.

now, me so hungee.

put on the brakes

i've been playing Charlie Parker solo and "S.S.T." bebop soli all afternoon.

i really need to listen to some good old "boom, crack. boom-boom crack" rock and roll music.

my robot heart

my friend Rachel McWhirter sent me a link to her cafepress site where various pieces of her artwork are put on any number of items, from thongs, to coffee mugs. she asked me to "please spread the word of my store to your friends."

friends, this is word of her store.

where are those curves coming from?

Nellie McKay

so i've now gotten into this female pianist/vocalist Nellie McKay (pronounced mc-KAI). i recommend her double album, Get Away From Me highly. her style is kind of off-the-wall. one song is a rap that at one point mentions Paul Wellstone, another is a jazz-ballad.

live bootlegs of her songs can be found at nelliemckay.net.

also, high quality live/studio recordings can be found on NPR's Website.

rilo kiley show

i didn't end up seeng John Vanderslice. last night was the Rilo Kiley show at Hailey's.

two groups: The Elected and Tilly & the Wall preceded Rilo Kiley's appearance on stage. the Elected were pretty good indie/folky/quasi-country, but Tilly & the Wall left something to be desired. namely: a drummer and bassist. in the stead of a drummer, they had a drum machine and a girl tap dancing on some metal plates.

Rilo Kiley didn't start playing until about midnight. they played a lot of material from their latest album, More Adventurous. to everyone's delight, i'm sure, they played "Portions For Foxes," no doubt a standout track. they also played almost the same amount of stuff from The Execution of All Things. some people kept yelling for "Glendora," but i guess Rilo Kiley refuse to play it. they probably have some good reason.

the drummer was really good, and really owned on this 32nd note fill on the last full band song. it made my eyes bug out.

Hailey's was really small and crowded, and i felt not-so-good at points, but i made it through all the sets. i promptly fell asleep, not to wake until 1:30 today. good morning.

midterm week

this week has been pretty busy. all packed with midterms, but now it's nearly over. all i have left is my 5:00 arranging lab. i have this crazy idea to merge the chords to the bridge of Ben Folds' song, "Protection" into the A section of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way." we'll see what the lab instructor says about that.

so tonight, i don't have any explicit plans, but John Vanderslice is playing at Hailey's Club. i may very well end up going to that. if i do, it will be a Hailey's weekend, because i'm seeing Rilo Kiley and The Elected at Hailey's tomorrow. it should be a good weekend.

it seems everyone has settled into a moderate posting pace. such is the ebb and flow of internet bloggery.

the Killers were

i went to see the Killers with shannon last night. i got to walk around the skeezy part of Deep Ellum, with broken down doors, crackpipes and everything. after dinner of a slice of pizza and chocolate fortune cookie, we got into the Gypsy Tea Room, a moderately sized small venue.

the opening act, Trouble Everyday sucked. the lead singer was more of a lead shouter and during the first song, he played his guitar solo while holding his guitar out over the crowd.

Dear Trouble Everyday's Lead Singer/Guitarist,

You must first actually rock someone with your music before becoming a rock star.

Love,

John Guari

the Killers put on a great show. they played almost all the songs off of their album Hot Fuss as well as some B-sides and new material. the singer, Brandon Flowers told the audience that he was a bit sick, and therefore less animated than he usually was. regardless, his voice still sounded great.

earlier yesterday, i had my lesson, plus THREE MIDTERMS. every single class i had, except lab band was a midterm. it was not enjoyable. the Killers' show was the light at the end of the tunnel for me.

it's people!

this friday, the members of the University of North Texas Men's Ultimate Team: Soylent Green (of which i am a member) headed out to Norman, OK for a 20-team tournament. Soylent Green was seeded 18th. we were not expected to win the tournament. how did we respond?

BY WINNING THE TOURNAMENT

the teams we played were: Colorado University (not the A squad), Arkansas State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State Univeristy, Colorado State University, University of Texas-Austin, and Oklahoma University.

all the games were to 13 points except versus UT and Oklahoma University, which were to 15 points. the only team (if i'm not mistaken) that got to double digits versus us was UT, with 10.

if you can't tell by my prose, i'm incredibly pumped about this. everyone played out of their minds on both offense and defense.

Soylent Green christened every game with the following cheer:

Leader: Where's the Beef?
All: THERE IS NO BEEF!
Leader: So what do we bring?
All: SOYLENT GREEN!

also, the cheer "Soylent Green: IT'S PEOPLE!" was often heard echoing throughout the intramural fields of Oklahoma University.

huzzah!

autumn in texas

in Edina, MN, it's 49 degrees Fahrenheit.

in Appleton, WI, as well as Chicago, IL, it's 61 degrees Fahrenheit.

in Denton, TX, it's 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

in October, Texas will have a few "chilly" days, but can jump back up to summer-like temperatures. autumn is one of the things i miss about living up north.

though in February, when my family and friends are complaining of single-digit (and negative single digit) temperatures, i'll be enjoying the upper 40s down here!

mini photo tour

our door. currently adorned with a "no hug = no rug" ransom note from the first time my welcome mat was stolen, an auxiliary rug that says "welcome to the party," a picture of a samurai, a car ad that says "i think, therefore i kick ass," a Sockbaby "poster," our microphone name tags (guy, and guy (respectively)), and several things we didn't put up there, but are too lazy to take down.

this is the view of our room from the door stones's desk is on the left, our beds are parallel to the wall with the futon in front, and my desk is diagonal in the corner.

a view from the other side.

this is what technically would be called the "vanity area," but stones and i have dubbed it "food corner," as we now use it mainly for refrigerator and microwave space.

there you have it, the living quarters of john guari and jeremy stones.

no tourney, costumes

the frisbee tournament at TCU has been canceled.

elizabeth had the greatest idea for costumes for the costume contest at the Death Cab for Cutie concert: Royal Tenenbaums. i'm thinking with a little curling action, and some darker hair dye, i could pull off Chas Tenenbaum.

thoughts?

tuesday better than monday

today was better than yesterday. will explain more later.

EDIT: okay, even though it's midway through wednesday, i will speak of tuesday. i woke up and got some frosted flakes, milk and what's now becoming my customary tuesday morning cup of coffee. the coffee was not scalding hot. big plus. no burnt tongue for me!

my lesson went decent. i still haven't technically had a "bad" lesson yet, which is good, because they can ruin the beginning of my day.

my 10:00 class was canceled, as the teacher was not there 5 minutes after class, and there were no signs of her being their prior. she has two classes in there before mine, and the tables and piano were pushed up against the wall.

fizucks was lame, as usual. nate and i did our lab (i usually do mine on thursday) and it took about a half an hour (most labs take over an hour).

i played pretty well in improv. bonus!

lab band was meh.

frisbee practice was pretty good. my right leg felt pretty sore afterwards, as i was the thrower for a drill for a long time. i think the frisbee captain is more and more realizing that i actually know what i'm doing when it comes to frisbee most of the time. there's a two day tourney at TCU i think i'm going to attend this weekend.

i watched the last episode of Freaks and Geeks in Bustos's room. granted, we have two discs of solid bonus material, plus commentary tracks on every episode, so there's much more merriment to be made.

sleep responsibly

i need to go to bed earlier, at least on days when i have to get up early. i slept through my 8:00 AM class (Theory III) today. there was some sort of assignment due, i think. i'll see what i can do about that.

it rained hard for about half the day. i managed to get two naps in, to try to take the edge off of the 5 or so hours of sleep i got.

the last few weeks have been majorly stressful. the next couple don't look like they'll be as tough, which is good.

it's already something like the sixth week of classes. that means midterms are coming up.

:(

we're "un-hello" now

Matt Hagen (whose website has wasted away into oblivion) informed me a few days ago that the third and final chapter of the Sockbaby saga has been uploaded.

i found Sockbaby on Channel 101 after Ben Decker and his roommate showed me the first episode of The 'Bu.

i enjoy it. its weirdness is good to my brain.

"sick" but not sick

ok, so i'm dumb. i didn't get sick from jeremy, it's all the POLLEN that is making my throat scratchy and nose stuffy.

i am kind of tired and bluh (pluh, in french). it's time to practice trumpet, because that's how i do.

best REAL ACTUAL search engine strings of september

muscly armed paperboy

gumby and pals images

koala yummies

undercover bears

cross-works & apple

and suprisingly, the search term "eric stinson" accounts for 5% of search phrases that get people to this website.

all right, so september was kind of a lame month as far as funny search engine strings go. better luck this month!
