so it will be my third straight semester in the Five O'Clock!

i retained my chair from last semester, which is good, seeing as I didn't move down. Pretty much all is right with the world, as I consider everyone in the four spots above me to be better players than I am. I'll be taking jazz lessons this year, which I think will help me in the auditions to come. My biggest annoyance with still being in the Five O' Clock is the Time we rehearse: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. It just stretches my day out so that I'm not done until dinner time.

Oh well. Time will be good. I'll get better, people above me will graduate and stuff like that. UNT is just a snapshot of where I am in a specific place. I'm excited about writing, and writing shall be my main focus this semester, I think.

my life. for HLM

ben decker wanted me to blog about my life, which, admittedly is something i haven't done for a while. this is a valid request, which shall be honored posthaste.

exciting things

mr. holm is going to get me a commission to write for the MN Youth Jazz Band that he runs. this is incredibly exciting, but also nerve wracking. my deadline for a product is in two weeks, about. two weeks is not a lot of time to write a big band chart, but my previous work has taught me how to work more efficiently. i've already had ideas flowing in my head for a while, so i just need to get some time logged at the piano with paper and pencil.

also exciting is that two days ago, me and chris (guitar player for my band) wrote another song. i wrote one by myself just recently as well. i wrote some of the music my last few days in MN and the words and the rest of the music on the plane and in my room here in TX. i'm just glad i was able to write anything at all, as words are not very much my strong suit. right now, we're sitting at about 7 or 8 songs of original music. chris also received a bunch of recording equipment for christmas, that we can use to make a demo demo. hopefully we can get a decent set going and play some shows. that is, if i have time in between writing for MYJB, writing for school, big band rehearsals, combo rehearsals, and committing seppuku. additional note: we're still looking for a good, memorable, and most of all unique band name. any suggestions can be commented, IMed or emailed to me.

due to IAJE being this weekend, my audition for lab band isn't until tomorrow. this is good, because it's allowed me extra time to build up my atrophied chops. wisdom tooth removal is a bitch.

a lot of people have been asking me what i'm doing this summer. at this point, it could one of a few things. i may see if i can work on carnival cruiselines as a showband member. i've heard it's a blast and it's something i'd like to try. cruising around the caribbean isn't assured though. i may go home to MN and work and try to gig and write, or i may stay down in TX and take classes and try to gig and write. there are lots of possibilities and lots of unknowns at this point. i don't even know what my living situation will be. obviously, if i'm not in TX, i probably won't rent property there, but i don't know what i'll be doing next fall either.

my classes for the fall are as follows:

  • Jazz Trumpet Lessons
  • Classical Trumpet Lessons
  • Arranging IV
  • Jazz Forum (Combo)
  • Lab Band
  • Astrology ASTRONOMY + Lab
  • American Gov't II
  • Jazz Singers (sound)

i'll have the same classical teacher as last semester, most likely. i don't know who my jazz teacher will be. once i get everything registered, i'll be sitting at 17 credit hours, which may very well kill me. if the work seems overwhelming, i'll probably drop government and take it at a different time, which would put me at a manageable 14 credit hours. bear in mind i only had 14 credit hours last semester and it was my most stressful ever (though not entirely due to workload).

i'm optimistic about this semester. i hope i can stay that way as long as possible.
